Every year on December 4, the Orthodox Church celebrates the Entry of the Most Holy Theotokos into the temple, a holiday marking the beginning of the ministry of the Virgin Mary. In 2025, it falls on a Thursday. Izvestia tells about the history, meaning and traditions of the celebration, as well as the folk signs associated with it.

The introduction to the temple of the Blessed Virgin Mary in 2025 — the history of the holiday

The entrance to the temple is the latest of the twelve feasts. Until the 8th century, this event was not celebrated separately, but was considered as part of the Nativity of the Virgin. The separate celebration originated in Constantinople and initially did not have a solemn service. It was only in the X–XI centuries that the Introduction acquired the main features of a great ecclesiastical celebration.

The events of the holiday are described in the church tradition. The righteous Joachim and Anna remained childless for a long time. They prayed fervently for the gift of a child and vowed to dedicate their child to God. In response to their prayers, a daughter was born, who was named Maria.

When the girl was three years old, she was brought to the Jerusalem temple, accompanied by relatives, to fulfill her promise to the Lord. The procession was met by clergymen led by High Priest Zachariah, the father of the Prophet John the Baptist.

Once at the foot of the temple, little Maria climbed the steep steps on her own, which surprised the adults a lot. Saint Zachariah waited for the girl upstairs and led her into the holy of holies, a special place where only the high priest had the right to enter once a year. Such a blatant violation of the principles was explained by a special vision received by Zachariah, from which he learned about the future mission of Mary.

In the Jerusalem temple, the Blessed Virgin lived among pious women until her 15th birthday. After that, the clergy began to advise her to choose a spouse and leave the temple. However, Mary firmly decided to devote herself to God and took a vow of chastity. Then Zachariah proposed to the girl to get engaged to the righteous widower Joseph, who, in fact, became the keeper of her vow. After the wedding, the couple left for Nazareth, where Mary received the good news of the birth of the Son of God.

The meaning of the feast of the Entry of the Most Holy Theotokos into the Temple

The entrance to the temple symbolizes selfless service to God and readiness for spiritual achievement. On this day, the clergy in their sermons emphasize the importance of communion with church life, purification of the soul and sincere repentance.

From a theological point of view, the entry of the Virgin Mary into the temple means the union of heavenly and earthly principles. This event marks the formation of the spiritual ladder by which the Savior will come into the world.

The act of the high priest Zacharias, who admitted the Virgin Mary into the holy of holies, is also symbolic. By that time, the Jerusalem temple had managed to survive more than one attack by Gentiles. And after the Babylonian captivity (597-538 BC), one of the most important relics, the Ark of the Covenant, was lost. The Holy of Holies, where the Ark used to be kept, turned out to be empty. Therefore, bringing young Mary to this sacred part of the temple was of great importance. The future Mother of God became a living Ark of the New Testament, announcing the approach of the Nativity of Christ.

Introduction to the Temple of the Most Holy Theotokos — church traditions on December 4

Solemn divine services are held in all Orthodox churches in honor of the holiday. They include Little Vespers, Matins, hours, and the Divine Liturgy, the main divine service of the day. The clergy dress in blue robes, which symbolizes the purity of the Virgin.

On the day of the Introduction, many church-going parents bring their children to their first confession. According to Orthodox tradition, young Christians can participate in the sacrament from the age of seven.

The Feast of the Introduction also marks the beginning of preparations for the Nativity of Christ. At matins, the chant "Christ is born — Praise" begins to be sung, which gradually creates a special, joyful mood among the faithful, anticipating the main Christian celebration.

Folk traditions of the Introduction of the Most Holy Theotokos into the Temple

In Russia, the Introduction was considered a women's, or "women's", holiday along with the Protection of the Virgin, Paraskeva Friday Day, as well as the day of remembrance of the martyrs Catherine and Barbara. It was believed that on December 4, the Virgin Mary helps women in household chores, gives them her protection and patronage.

In the folk environment, the holiday was associated with the final onset of winter. If enough snow fell by December 4, the tobogganing season was opened in the villages. Newlyweds who were recently married in a church were traditionally the first to leave the mountain.

In the old days, the Introduction was also the day of the first winter auction. Fairs began immediately after the end of the liturgy and were often located in squares near churches. A variety of goods were offered for sale, but sleighs were especially popular — single, paired, everyday and festive, decorated with elaborate carvings or paintings. They also sold horse-drawn harnesses for the winter and various treats: hot pies, pickles, sbiten, etc.

Godparents paid special attention to their godchildren on the holiday. They were given gifts, sweets and other delicacies.

A powerful prayer for the Entry of the Virgin into the temple

"O Most Holy Virgin, Queen of heaven and earth, who was chosen by the Bride of God before the age, but in the last days came to the temple of the law to be betrothed to the Heavenly Bridegroom! You left Your people and your father's house to sacrifice to Yourself a pure and immaculate Goddess, and you were the first to take a vow of perpetual virginity. Grant us to keep ourselves in chastity and purity and in the fear of God all the days of our lives, so that we may be temples of the Holy Spirit, and help all who live in Your abode and have committed themselves to the service of God to lead their lives in the purity of virginity and from youth to bear the good and light yoke of Christ, keeping their vows holy.. O All-pure One, You have spent all the days of Your youth in the temple of the Lord, far from the temptations of this world, in constant prayer vigil and in all mental and physical abstinence. Help us also to repel all the temptations of the enemy from the flesh, the world and the devil that have come upon us since our youth, and to overcome them through prayer and fasting. You are in the temple of the Lord with the Angels, adorned with all the virtues, especially humility, purity and love, and you have been brought up with dignity, so that you may be ready to contain the Uncompensated Word of God in your flesh. Grant us, too, who are possessed by pride, intemperance, and sloth, to be clothed with all spiritual perfection, so that, with Your help, each one of us may prepare the wedding garment of his soul and the oil of goodness, so that we may not come and be prepared to meet our Immortal Bridegroom and Your Son, Christ the Savior and our God, but may we receive As wise virgins in the heavenly monastery, together with all the saints, vouchsafe us to glorify and glorify the all-holy name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and Your merciful intercession always, now and ever, and unto the ages of ages. Amen to that."
