What kind of holiday is celebrated on December 4th
On December 4, Russian Orthodox believers celebrate the Feast of the Entry of the Most Holy Theotokos into the temple. The day is dedicated to the event when Mary's parents brought their three-year-old daughter to the Jerusalem temple to serve God. The holiday is one of the twelve great feasts and is considered one of the significant events of the church calendar.
The Day of the Introduction symbolizes the beginning of the spiritual education of the Mother of God and anticipates her role as the Mother of the Savior. On this day, solemn divine services are held, during which troparia, kontakion and prayers dedicated to the Virgin Mary are read.
Event history: how Mary was brought into the temple
According to church tradition, Mary's parents remained childless until a late age. After the birth of their daughter, they fulfilled their vow to dedicate her to the service of God. At the age of three, Mary was brought to the temple in Jerusalem.
She was met by the high priest Zachariah, who led the child into the innermost place of the temple. Such dedication is perceived as a symbol of spiritual education and complete dedication to God.
In the church tradition, the event of the Introduction became the basis for the creation of troparia, kontakion and akathists, praising the spiritual significance of the holiday.
What can and cannot be done on a holiday
On the day of the Introduction, believers are not recommended to engage in hard work, cleaning and repairs. Noisy celebrations, quarrels and disputes are not allowed.
There are a number of traditional restrictions: you should not start large transactions, get married and lend money. These measures are related to the desire to focus on prayer and spiritual life. At the same time, the holiday coincides with the Christmas Fast, and in a number of parishes indulgences are allowed: the consumption of fish and wine is allowed.
How to spend a day for a believer at home and in church
Believers are encouraged to attend the Divine Liturgy and take part in prayer services in front of the icons of the Virgin. Candles are usually placed on the territory of temples, and believers have the opportunity to venerate the icon of the holiday.
It is recommended to read the troparion and kontakion of the feast, prayers to the Mother of God. Special attention is paid to spiritual concentration and pious behavior.
On the day of the Introduction, it is also customary to do good deeds: help those in need, visit the sick and support loved ones. At the same time, the meal should be moderate, with observance of lenten traditions.
