Every year on December 4, Orthodox Christians celebrate an important church celebration — the Entry of the Most Holy Theotokos into the temple. On this day, they remember an episode from Mary's childhood, from which her destiny as the Mother of God began. Tips for congratulating loved ones are in the Izvestia article.
The history of the feast of the Introduction to the Temple of the Virgin
There is no mention of Mary's early years in the Gospels. Information about the childhood of the Blessed Virgin Mary is limited, and many details are known only from church traditions, which believers honor along with the Bible.
According to legend, Mary's parents, the righteous Joachim and Anna, remained childless for a long time. Despite their age, they did not stop praying for the birth of a child and vowed to dedicate their future son or daughter to God, giving him to be raised in a temple.
In ancient Jewish society, the absence of children was considered a punishment for sins, and a sacrifice from a childless person was considered unacceptable. Grieved, Joachim went into the desert, where he spent 40 days in prayer and repentance. At that time, Anna was praying at home, lamenting the misfortune of her family.
An angel of God appeared to Anna, informing her that her prayers had been answered and that a daughter would be born, destined for the salvation of mankind. A similar sign was given to Joachim. At the appointed time, Maria was born.
When the girl was three years old, her parents decided to fulfill this vow and took her to the Jerusalem temple. Having dressed Mary in her best dress, they went with relatives to the shrine. The procession was met by the clergy, led by the High Priest Zachariah, the father of John the Baptist.
To the surprise of everyone present, young Mary climbed the stairs to the temple on her own and entered the Holy of Holies, a room where only the high priest had the right to enter once a year. Zachariah did so by divine revelation, knowing about the great destiny of the Virgin.
In the temple, Mary studied the Holy Scriptures, prayed, and did needlework. Upon reaching the age of 15, the priests advised her to marry, but the Virgin Mary remained faithful to her vow of chastity to God. The high priest offered to betroth her to the righteous widower Joseph, who became her guardian and keeper of the vow. After that, Mary settled in Joseph's house.
How to celebrate the holiday on December 4th
The Feast of the Entry of the Most Holy Theotokos into the temple began to be celebrated in the first centuries of Christianity. Until the 8th century, the celebration was often combined with the Nativity of the Virgin. A separate celebration originated in Constantinople and eventually spread to Russia.
In Russia, the holiday was one of the most anticipated. The girls and women prayed to the Blessed Virgin, asking for intercession and help in family and household matters.
If snow fell by the time of the Introduction, the sledding season opened: the newlyweds were the first to leave the mountains, followed by all the young people. Skating was accompanied by games, jokes and competitions.
Special attention was paid to fairs, which were called Vvedenskiye. Trade began immediately after the Liturgy, and rows unfolded in squares near churches. At such fairs, you could enjoy fresh pastries, snow, and buy sleighs — from simple to decorated with carvings and paintings.
How to congratulate your family and friends
Today, the entry of the Most Holy Theotokos into the temple is celebrated modestly. Believers attend solemn divine services, after which they gather in a family circle. Children are often brought to their first confession, symbolically "ushered into the temple," as was done with Mary.
With the advent of digital technology, believers have many ways to congratulate each other. Electronic postcards with the image of the young Virgin Mary ascending the steps of the Jerusalem temple, as well as with the image of the adult Virgin Mary with the baby Jesus, are distributed.
Congratulations can be short and warm, as well as in prose or poetry, with personal wishes. Traditionally, small symbolic gifts are given to loved ones, and online greetings are decorated with beautiful signatures, frames, and, if necessary, appropriate emojis that emphasize the solemnity of the event.
