The Belarusian Foreign Ministry accused Kiev of sacrificing the safety of citizens for the sake of politics

Kiev's decision to terminate the agreement with Minsk on prompt notification of nuclear accidents puts the safety of Ukrainians at risk and makes it dependent on the political situation. This was announced on September 21 by the press secretary of the Belarusian Foreign Ministry Ruslan Varankov.

"Kiev cannot but realize that it is undermining the protection of its own citizens, sacrificing them to a momentary political situation that has nothing to do with radiation safety," the BelTA news agency quoted Varankov as saying.

Belarus has not yet received an official notification of the termination of the agreement. It will cease to be valid six months after receiving such a document. Varankov noted that other mechanisms of interaction will remain after that. Both countries remain parties to the 1986 Convention on Early Notification of a Nuclear Accident, and will also be able to use communication channels through the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

On September 10, the Cabinet of Ministers in Ukraine ordered the introduction of a special border regime along the border with Russia and Belarus for the period of martial law. The document prohibits the free entry, stay, residence and movement of people within a kilometer-long strip. Work not related to military operations is also limited.

On September 11, President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko noted that the republic periodically records violations of its airspace, as neighboring countries increase spending on weapons and conduct exercises near the borders. He stressed that Minsk needs to prepare for possible threats in order to prevent the development of conflicts.
