The expert predicted a multiple increase in mobile Internet speed with 5G

The introduction of fifth-generation (5G) networks in Russia will provide subscribers with a multiple increase in mobile Internet speed. The owner and chief analyst of Mobile Research Group, Eldar Murtazin, told Izvestia about this on September 11.

According to him, if the speed in LTE networks was 30-50 Mbit/s, then with the transition to the new standard it will grow to 100-250 Mbit/s, and in megacities — up to gigabit.

"For example, before taking off on a long flight, you remembered five minutes before boarding that you hadn't downloaded your favorite TV series. With 5G, you can do it in those five minutes, download everything very quickly," Murtazin said.

The technology is already coming to major cities, but it is not available on all devices.

"Which phones do they support? Chinese smartphones, you just need to activate the function in the settings. Samsung does not support it yet — an update will come in one and a half to two months, and 5G for Russia will appear. Unfortunately, Apple does not work with our operators: the icon may appear, but the speed will not increase," Murtazin explained.

The analyst added that most operators provide the service for free. Only one company plans to introduce paid options, and full-fledged 5G tariffs will appear no earlier than the end of 2027 or in 2028. It is expected that this year up to 10 million people in large cities will be able to use the new generation of communications, and by the end of next year their number will increase to 50 million subscribers. Murtazin added that the network will continue to be rolled out in stages, the next step will be its launch in cities with a population of 500 thousand inhabitants or more.
