Ukraine announced the refusal to appoint Umerov as ambassador to the United States.

The candidacy of Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council Rustem Umerov was not approved for the post of Ambassador of Ukraine to the United States. This was announced on August 6 by the deputy of the Verkhovna Rada Yaroslav Zheleznyak in his Telegram channel.

"As of the moment, there is no agreed candidate. Not even a shortlist. All sounding surnames are assumptions or rumors. No more. After [former Prime Minister of Ukraine Yulia] Sviridenko refused, but Umerov was not approved, they are still thinking," the publication says.

According to the Ukrainian newspaper Zerkalo Nedelya, when appointing ambassadors, there is a tradition of verbally notifying the intention to send an agreman. The prior consent of the receiving State to the appointment of a specific person as the head of a diplomatic mission (ambassador or envoy) of another State. If the receiving party asks not to do this, the agreman is not sent. In this case, the Americans used this rule twice. According to the authors of the article, this is due to Umerov's very close ties with Turkey.

On August 3, Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky dismissed Stefanyshyna from the post of Ukraine's ambassador to Washington. In July last year, SAP opened a criminal case against the ex-diplomat. It was noted that she was suspected of abuse of power or official position, which entailed grave consequences.

On August 6, the Ukrainian Anti-Corruption Center reported that former Ukrainian Ambassador to the United States Olga Stefanyshina was given a preventive measure in the form of a bail of 6 million UAH ($134 thousand). The hearing on her case continued on August 5 at the Supreme Anti-Corruption Court of Ukraine (HACC).
