Romania started buying electricity in Ukraine due to shortage

Romania has started purchasing electricity in Ukraine due to shortages as a result of falling water levels in the Danube. This was announced on August 3 by the state-owned company Nuclearelectrica.

"Nuclearelectrica buys energy from Ukraine with the support of Energocom, an energy supplier in the Republic of Moldova," reads a statement posted on the company's Facebook page (owned by Meta, which is recognized as extremist and banned in Russia).

It is specified that this energy will be used to cover the energy shortage that was caused as a result of the shutdown of the first power unit of the nuclear power plant (NPP) in Chernavoda, and to mitigate the impact of this shortage on the country's energy market.

The company noted that the current difficult situation in Romania and at the regional level caused by the extreme drought on the Danube requires a long-term partnership and strong trade relations that will provide mutual support and maintain the stability of the national energy system.

Bloomberg reported on the same day that the Romanian military blew up a rock formation in the Danube riverbed in order to increase the flow of water to the country's only Chernavode nuclear power plant amid drought and the threat of shutting down the second power unit. In addition, by August 5, the authorities plan to flood four barges loaded with stones and other materials in order to create an artificial barrier and direct the flow of water to the station.
