Russian scientists are working on several technologies for the oil and gas and energy industries at once. Among them are the production of fuel from silt deposits and other waste, a digital model for calculating the heating of oil equipment in the Arctic, new ways to produce liquid fuel components from plant biomass, as well as solutions that increase the efficiency of alternative fuel combustion. New fuel will be obtained from the silt

Tomsk Polytechnic University is developing technologies for the production of fuel pellets and briquettes from various types of waste. Scientists use, in particular, sewage sludge, oil refining waste, cardboard and other materials as raw materials. At the same time, experts are creating an intelligent system that will allow faster selection of the optimal composition of the new fuel.

— The developed intelligent complex will make it possible to transfer the process of selecting formulations from the empirical to the computational and experimental plane. This will ensure a scientifically sound choice of composition, minimize costs and accelerate the creation of new composite fuels," said Galina Nyashina, project manager, granot recipient of the Russian Academy of Natural Sciences, Associate Professor at the TPU Research School of Physics of High—Energy Processes.

According to the researchers, the use of such fuels will reduce harmful emissions, as well as involve waste that is currently sent to landfills in recycling. In addition, the technology can become the basis for the creation of new production facilities in the regions.

A digital twin of oil equipment will be created for the Arctic

Scientists at Perm National Research Polytechnic University have developed a mathematical model that will help accurately calculate the power of heating systems for oil and gas equipment for operation in the Far North. It takes into account weather conditions and operational features, which will avoid both freezing of the equipment and overheating.

— The final consumers are oil producing companies, but the calculation model itself is intended for design institutes and manufacturing plants. It allows you to accurately select the characteristics of heating systems for specific operating conditions," said Nikita Kostarev, Associate Professor of the Department of Design and Technology in Electrical Engineering at PNRPU, Candidate of Technical Sciences.

The development is being created at the request of NPO PermNefteGaz, a manufacturer of equipment for the oil and gas industry. According to scientists, the solution will help reduce energy costs for heating equipment, reduce the risk of mining accidents and extend the service life of equipment operating in the Arctic.

Biomass will be converted into liquid fuel components

Tver State Technical University is creating new catalysts that will allow processing plant resources into substances for the production of liquid fuels and polymers. Such materials can become an alternative to some petrochemical raw materials and make biomass processing more efficient.

— During the implementation of the project, bifunctional catalysts have been developed that combine acid-base and metallic active centers. They make it possible to process plant polysaccharides into compounds that are precursors of a wide range of hydrocarbons, components of liquid fuels," said Valentina Matveeva, project manager, Professor at the Department of Biotechnology, Chemistry and Standardization at the Faculty of Chemical Technology, grant recipient of the Russian National Science Foundation.

According to scientists, the new catalysts will allow several chemical processes to be carried out at once in one installation. This will reduce the number of production steps, reduce costs and increase the yield of useful products.

Alternative fuels will be made more efficient

Tomsk Polytechnic University is also developing a technology that will improve the efficiency of burning alternative fuels. Researchers are studying how droplets of such mixtures behave at high temperatures in order to achieve their more complete and efficient combustion in the combustion chamber.

— The project is aimed at improving the efficiency of the combustion process of non-designed liquid fuels. Now scientists have selected several compositions of water-fuel emulsions that retain their properties even at subzero temperatures. The next stage will be testing at pilot power plants, where experts will assess how much new mixtures can improve the efficiency of engines and power equipment.
