The expert explained the causes of dry eyes after 40 years
Angelina Kazantseva, an assistant at the Department of Ophthalmology named after Academician A.P. Nesterov at the Institute of Clinical Medicine of the Pirogov University of the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation, told why dry eyes appear after 40 years and why it requires correction.
In conversation with the agency RuNews24.ru On Monday, July 20, the specialist noted that at this age, the eyes are one of the first to react to changes. The most common of these is presbyopia, age—related hyperopia. Due to the decrease in the elasticity of the lens, it becomes more difficult for a person to read small print and focus on close objects. According to WHO, almost all people over the age of 45-50 face this condition. It is adjusted with glasses or multifocal lenses.
Another common change is dry eye syndrome. After the age of 40, the production of tears decreases, which causes burning, stinging, a feeling of sand and blurred vision, especially after working at a computer. The expert noted that this condition is associated, among other things, with hormonal changes and requires the use of moisturizing drops, notes 360.ru . In addition, floating "flies" may appear with age. If they are not accompanied by flashes of light and blurred vision, this is considered normal.
However, some symptoms require urgent medical attention. These include wavy lines and distorted letters, which may indicate age—related macular degeneration, gradual narrowing of the visual field ("tunnel vision") - one of the signs of glaucoma, the sudden appearance of fog or veil in one eye, characteristic of cataracts, as well as sudden loss of vision due to hypertension or diabetes mellitus.
Kazantseva emphasized that glaucoma develops for a long time without pain, but gradually damages the optic nerve, therefore, after 40 years of age, it is necessary to check intraocular pressure annually and undergo an examination of the fundus. A sharp decrease in vision may be associated with retinal vascular thrombosis and requires emergency medical care.
Ophthalmic surgeon Tatiana Shilova told Moscow 24 on July 19 that the use of low-quality decorative eye cosmetics can lead to corneal ulcers and permanent vision loss. In severe cases, erosions or ulcers develop on the cornea, which can lead to its clouding and a permanent decrease in vision, the website writes. kp.ru .
Ophthalmologist Olga Gladkova warned against wearing glasses with yellow lenses during the day, which many drivers use at night. According to her, they do not provide sufficient UV protection.
In June, Vladimir Belash, a neurologist and osteopath, warned about the risks of reading in bed. In particular, in this position it is difficult to adjust the distance to the eyes, which negatively affects and leads to a decrease in visual acuity faster, NSN notes.
Ophthalmologist Maria Levina in conversation with Pravda. In February, Ru noted that vision can deteriorate under the influence of many factors, from age—related changes and chronic diseases to overwork, stress and bad habits. Timely preventive examinations make it possible to identify violations at an early stage.
