- Experts spoke about the reasons for men's disappointment at the birth of their daughter.
The sex of an unborn child is determined at the time of fertilization and depends on the type of chromosome in a man's sperm, so women's accusations of giving birth to a girl have no biological basis. All the details are in the Izvestia article.
Responsibility for the sex of the embryo
The sex of the unborn child is determined exclusively at the time of fertilization and depends on the man's sperm. Eggs always carry an X chromosome, whereas spermatozoa can contain either an X or a Y chromosome. When the X chromosomes merge, a female embryo is formed, and the combination of XY gives a male embryo. Biologically, a woman does not participate in the choice of sex in any way and cannot control the process of fertilization with a specific type of sperm.
Anna Pozdnyakova, a gynecologist and reproductologist at the Medical Center, stressed that it is genetically incorrect to blame a woman for giving birth to a girl. Myths about women's guilt are shaped by a culture where the son was traditionally considered the heir and the mainstay. In modern medicine, sex selection is possible only within the framework of assisted reproductive technologies at the risk of severe hereditary diseases, but at the request of parents in Russia, this practice is not allowed.
"From a medical point of view, the sex of the unborn child is determined at the time of fertilization. A woman's egg always carries an X chromosome, and a man's sperm can carry an X or Y chromosome," said Anna Pozdnyakova.
Influence on the mother's condition
The father's reaction to the birth of his daughter significantly affects a woman's well-being during the postpartum period. According to Pozdnyakova, the coldness or disappointment of a partner can slow down the physical and emotional recovery of a mother who is already going through hormonal restructuring and lack of sleep. If a woman feels guilty or afraid of her husband's reaction, this affects the quality of care for the newborn and the general family regime.
So, short-term disappointment is not a pathology, but long-term alienation, aggression, or the requirement to have another child are considered dangerous signs. In such cases, not only psychological, but also crisis assistance may be required. In the first months of life, the child needs calm adults and the emotional accessibility of the mother.
Psychological causes of frustration
For many men, the desire to have a son is associated with an element of self-identity and the search for a "little doppelganger." Psychologist Ekaterina Catalina explains that in such cases, the child is perceived as a symbol of success or the heir to the family name. The birth of a daughter can be experienced as the destruction of an invented scenario, which leads to detachment or sarcasm on the part of the father.
It is important for a man to recognize that his feelings are not caused by the child himself, but by the discrepancy between reality and his fantasy. Attachment is often formed gradually through daily contact: caregiving, walking, and socializing. The parents' task is to remove the false guilt from the woman and ensure that the daughter is accepted so that she does not grow up feeling that she has become a "failed attempt" to give birth to a boy.
"It's important for a man in such a situation to honestly admit: I'm not disappointed with my daughter, but with the fact that reality didn't match my fantasy. This is a fundamental difference," said Catalina.
Accepting reality
Pozdnyakova draws attention to the fact that attempts to plan sex using folk methods do not have a medical basis.
"Diets, special cycle days, postures, blood renewal, moon phases and other popular methods do not give reliable results. They can create the illusion of control, but from a medical point of view, they are not a way to plan sex," Pozdnyakova concluded.
