Heavy rains and thunderstorms are expected in at least a third of Russian regions this week, with hail and wind gusts of up to 25 m/s in some places, Izvestia found out. Two cyclones will collide over the European part of the country, which could result in half of the monthly precipitation in the Moscow region. As a result of bad weather, flooding is also possible, since storm sewers are not designed for such a volume of water, hydrologists say. This problem has already been encountered in Chelyabinsk and Irkutsk. Read more about the weather anomalies of the week in the Izvestia article.

Where bad weather is expected

On July 9 and 10, prolonged downpours and thunderstorms will cover at least 30 Russian regions, Izvestia calculated based on data from the Hydrometeorological Center. And hail is also predicted in 11 of them.

So, very heavy rain and large hail are expected in the Chelyabinsk region and Tuva. Heavy rains will take place in the Amur region, and in Irkutsk precipitation will last for three days — from July 9 to 11.

In some regions, for example, in North Ossetia, Ingushetia and Chechnya, the wind is likely to increase to 25 m/s. But in the Kurgan region, despite its proximity to rainy regions, abnormal heat is predicted. The temperature there will be seven degrees or more above normal, according to the website of the Hydrometeorological Center. Currently, the air in the region is warming up to +32 degrees.

Heavy rains will take place in the Moscow region over the weekend, Tatyana Pozdnyakova, a leading specialist at the Meteonosti news agency, told Izvestia. But these days it will get warmer: the air will warm up to +24 ... +26 degrees.

— Cyclones will determine the weather. First, the western one, and then it will merge with the Caspian one," the expert clarified. — Over the weekend, the center of an extensive cyclone will be located almost over the Moscow region, so mostly cloudy weather will remain in the region.

Alexander Shuvalov, head of the Meteo forecasting center, confirmed to Izvestia that heavy precipitation is expected in Central Russia on Saturday and Sunday.

— Moderate rains with thunderstorms will take place somewhere, and there may be very heavy downpours somewhere, - he specified. — Up to 30-40 mm of precipitation will fall in places in the Moscow region.

The heaviest rains may fall in the western part of Central Russia — in the Tver and Kaluga regions. Up to 50 mm of precipitation is forecast over the weekend, Alexander Shuvalov said.

In just the first half of July, a monthly precipitation rate may actually fall in Moscow and the Moscow region, Tatyana Pozdnyakova does not exclude. However, the rains often stop in the second half of the month.

The worst weather will hit the western part of Central Russia — the Tver and Kaluga regions, where up to 50 mm of precipitation may fall over the weekend, said Alexander Shuvalov.

Tatiana Pozdnyakova does not rule out that by mid-July Moscow and the Moscow region will have already reached their monthly precipitation levels. However, there may not be any heavy rains in the second half of the month.

Effects of the rains

Heavy rains have already led to flooding in a number of Russian regions. In Chelyabinsk, part of the city was under water, and residents complain that the roads have turned into real seas. Meanwhile, forecasters expect heavy rains in the region again in the coming days.

"We have coped with the consequences of today's downpour and are ready for its continuation," the local administration said on social media. — On behalf of the head of Chelyabinsk, Alexei Loshkin, the places that are flooded with water the most due to the terrain features have been put under increased control. If necessary, the number of brigades will be increased in order to quickly work out a larger number of sites."

Roads, sidewalks and yards were also flooded in Irkutsk. 39 mm of precipitation fell there during the day — 37% of the monthly norm, the local administration said, citing the regional hydrometeorological center. The rains will not stop here in the near future.

According to Mikhail Bolgov, a hydrologist at the Institute of Water Problems of the Russian Academy of Sciences, a specialist in floods and the use of water resources, the loss of half of the monthly precipitation rate in just a few days threatens flooding in the Moscow region.

The expert believes that the construction of a reliable sewer system capable of coping with any precipitation will be too expensive. That is why urban drainage systems are designed taking into account the standard amount of precipitation. But with heavy rains, they do not always cope with the volume of water, and the streets are flooded.

— In Moscow, the problem is also that the city is almost completely built up: everything is covered with asphalt and tiles. When rain hits the ground, the water is absorbed. And when it's on a concrete surface or roof, it's not," he stressed. — This causes flooding.

Despite the heavy rainfall expected in Central Russia, flooding is unlikely this weekend, Alexander Shuvalov believes. Nevertheless, he did not rule out such a possibility.

— If there are heavy downpours (very heavy but short-lived rains, when a large amount of precipitation falls in a short time. — Ed.), in some places the streets may flood if the water drainage systems are overloaded," the expert noted.

According to the Hydrometeorological Center, on July 9, water levels will rise in the rivers of Karachay-Cherkessia, Kabardino-Balkaria, North Ossetia, Ingushetia, Chechnya and Dagestan. In some places, the indicators may approach dangerous levels. The continued rains will create an additional burden.
