- Politico announced the shutdown of the cooling system at the EC headquarters due to the heat
A massive shutdown of the air conditioning system took place at the headquarters of the European Commission (EC) in Brussels amid intense heat. This was reported by the Politico newspaper on June 25, citing an internal notice for staff.
"The headquarters of the European Commission was forced to turn off the air conditioning system on Friday due to the heat," the publication says.
According to the document, air cooling was forcibly stopped at the levels from the first to the seventh until the end of the working day. However, the restrictions did not affect the upper floors of the building.
The publication notes that the head of the EC, Ursula von der Leyen, continues to work on the 13th floor. Also, many European commissioners, whose offices are located on the eighth floor and above, remained in comfortable conditions.
According to Politico, such a distribution of resources caused outrage in the team. Employees of the department in personal conversations called the situation a disgrace and compared the privileged position of the leadership with "feudalism."
Rebecca Long-Bailey, a British politician and member of the House of Commons from Salford and Eccles, said on June 25 that the prevailing heat wave on the European continent poses a danger to workers in the UK, who are also deprived of legal protection in the current situation. It was clarified that the abnormal heat most affects workers in bakeries, food processing enterprises, warehouses, kitchens, factories, and construction sites.
