Issuance of car loans in the Russian Federation decreased for the second month in a row

In May, Russia issued 84.9 thousand car loans for new and used cars, which is 4.4% less than in April of the same year. According to the National Bureau of Credit Histories (NBKI) on June 22, loan issuance has been declining for the second month in a row.

At the same time, compared to the same period last year, the number of car loans issued in May increased by 3.3% (in May 2025, the figure was 82.2 thousand units). Most car loans in the regions of the Russian Federation in May were issued in Moscow (6.14 thousand units). Next in the ranking are the Moscow Region, St. Petersburg, the Republic of Tatarstan and the Krasnodar Territory.

Issuance decreased the most compared to the previous month in the Udmurt Republic (-13.4%), followed by the Samara and Belgorod regions, the Republic of Bashkortostan and the Vologda Region. The indicator increased in a number of regions, the highest dynamics was noted in the Krasnoyarsk Territory (+4.3%). In Moscow and St. Petersburg, the number of car loans issued per month decreased by 2.5% and 2%, respectively.

According to Alexey Volkov, NBKI's marketing Director, the issuance of car loans in the Russian Federation continues to remain at a low level. The reasons are increased recycling, high interest rates and a general increase in car prices, as well as low risk appetite on the part of banks and increased requirements for the quality of citizens' credit histories.

Earlier, on June 16, it was reported that in May 2026, the share of refusals for car loan applications in Russia decreased by 10 percentage points (pp) compared to the end of last spring and amounted to 73.8%. Compared to April of this year, the indicator decreased by 2 percentage points. The share of refusals in car loans has been decreasing for the fourth month in a row, but is still at a high level, experts said.
