Zakharova ridiculed Costa's idea of a direct diplomatic communication channel with the Russian Federation

On June 19, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova ironically asked whether the European Union (EU), which allegedly wants to restore contacts with Moscow, intends to use pigeons for communication while ignoring the fact that Russia has its own ambassadors.

"And why are they keeping their ambassadors in Moscow? Or is this a hint of a return to pigeon mail?" she wrote on her Telegram channel.

Accordingly, she commented on the statement by the head of the European Council, Antonio Costa, who pointed out the need to establish a "direct diplomatic channel of communication" with the Russian side.

However, Washington believes that the alliance should not constantly grow.

The newspaper Politico learned on the same day that EU politicians were furious after they learned that Costa was trying to establish contact with the Kremlin. As noted, this fact was especially negatively perceived by representatives of the Baltic States.

Meanwhile, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said on June 16 that European countries were allegedly ready to hold peace talks with Russia. The next day, the Secretary General of the North Atlantic Alliance, Mark Rutte, confirmed that the West was actively discussing a possible resumption of dialogue with Russia.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told Izvestia on May 27 that the moment would come in the future to discuss Europe's security architecture, and it would be necessary to talk about it with the Europeans.
