- Sky News has learned about the BBC's plans to lay off 550 employees as part of a cost-saving plan
The BBC Corporation will lay off about 550 employees and review the broadcasting network as part of the largest cost-cutting plan in almost 15 years. This was reported on June 17 by Sky News channel.
"Our news anchors have a unique connection with the audience. However, given the need for savings across the entire BBC News service, we are reviewing the positions of the main presenters. This measure will make it possible to achieve the optimal number of specialists involved as flexibly and efficiently as possible, in order to balance the needs of viewers and optimal costs," said Jonathan Munro, Interim head of the news service.
Matt Brittin, CEO of the corporation, notified the staff about the start of the cost reduction plan. The organization intends to cut costs by 160 million pounds (more than $214 million) by the end of the current fiscal year. The layoffs will affect employees of the company's news, television, and radio broadcasting divisions.
In the coming months, management will introduce additional cost-reduction measures in all corporate structures. Another 700 corporate positions are expected to be cut. The number of senior positions is planned to be reduced by at least 10%.
In total, the large-scale optimization initiative provides for the elimination of up to 2,000 jobs. The company is also currently studying a proposal to abolish specialized anchor positions for social networks. At the same time, the release of the Newsnight television program will be postponed to Friday's prime time.
At the same time, in April it was noted that the BBC also planned to lay off about 2,000 employees amid cost cuts. It is noted that this is the largest reduction in staff for the first time in 15 years. This is due to an attempt to reduce costs by 10% over the next three years.
