Georgia announced the EU's demand to impose sanctions against Russia in exchange for visa-free travel

The European Union (EU) has demanded that Georgia impose sanctions against Russia in exchange for extending the visa-free regime. This was announced on June 10 by the Chairman of the Georgian Parliament, Shalva Papuashvili.

"They tell us that if we want visa—free travel, we must impose sanctions against Russia, that is, commit suicide," Sputnik Georgia reports his words on the Telegram channel.

Papuashvili added that the EU is asking the Georgian government to destroy its own country by imposing sanctions against Russia. He noted that Brussels is trying to turn the visa into a political weapon.

The calculation is over: the EU does not expect restoration of relations with Tbilisi until 2028.

On March 6, the European Commission (EC) suspended the visa-free regime for holders of Georgian official, official and diplomatic passports. The relevant decision was allegedly made against the background of systematic and deliberate violations by Georgia of its obligations under the visa-free regime "in key areas of democracy and fundamental rights."

On December 23, 2025, Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze stated that the EU had used the topic of Georgia's possible European integration to blackmail and exert pressure on the country. According to him, the so-called "open door policy" pursued by European countries was actually a "draught policy."
