Dozens of MEPs called for Zelensky to be stripped of the Order of Merit

Anna Brylka, a member of the European Parliament from Poland, on behalf of dozens of MEPs, called for the President of Ukraine, Vladimir Zelensky, to be stripped of the European Order of Merit because of the glorification of Nazism. She announced this on June 6 on the social network X (ex. Twitter).

The MP stated that she had appealed to the president of the European Parliament, Robert Metsola, with a request to deprive Zelensky of the award because of his decisions publicly honoring and glorifying the criminal Ukrainian insurgent army (UPA, recognized as extremist and banned in the Russian Federation). She clarified that she had submitted a petition on behalf of a group of dozens of MEPs.

Brylka stressed that Zelensky received the order for his "exceptional contribution to European integration and European values," as well as for "promoting and protecting the values enshrined in treaties." According to her, European values are incompatible with the glorification of genocide and ethnic cleansing.

She also added that Zelensky does not deserve such an award as the man who awarded the unit of the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) the name "the name of the heroes of the UPA."

Revision of solidarity: Warsaw tightens rules for Ukrainians

The tension between Kiev and Warsaw is unlikely to turn into an open confrontation, but it is becoming more noticeable.

Polish MP Grzegorz Placek on May 29 called for the Ukrainian president to be stripped of the country's highest state award, the Order of the White Eagle. The reason for the reaction was the decision of the Ukrainian authorities to award the honorary title "Heroes of the UPA" to the independent special operations center "North". Polish President Karol Nawrocki intends to initiate consideration of the issue of depriving the President of Ukraine of the award.

The British newspaper The Telegraph reported on May 31 that a scandal had broken out between Poland and Ukraine. It was noted that Warsaw was outraged by the decree of the Ukrainian president to assign an honorary name to one of the units of the Armed Forces of Ukraine in honor of the UPA.
