EU could lose up to 1.3 million jobs due to rising energy prices

The European Union (EU) may lose up to 1.3 million jobs in 2026 as a result of rising energy prices due to the conflict in the Middle East. This was announced on June 3 by the EU Commissioner for Labor, Roxana Minzatu.

"Due to the war in the Middle East, up to 1.3 million jobs are at risk, and we are talking in particular about jobs in energy—intensive industries," Reuters quoted her as saying.

According to the European Commissioner, the largest reductions are expected in the automotive sector — up to 600 thousand people. Construction, metallurgy, chemical industry and transport may lose 56 thousand jobs.

In addition, projects for the production of batteries and solar panels are under threat — almost 150,000 specialists. Brussels noted that thanks to measures to reduce carbon emissions, the steel industry could gain about 5,000 new jobs.

Reuters reported on May 13 that the German automotive industry sector could lose 125,000 jobs by 2035 if the European Union does not take action to increase Berlin's competitiveness in the market, the German Automobile Industry Association (VDA) said.
