NYT has learned about the EU's plan to reduce dependence on American technology
The European Union (EU) has presented its plan to reduce the dependence of the bloc's countries on American technologies, including by expanding the region's data center capabilities. This was reported on June 3 by The New York Times (NYT).
"Representatives of the European Union have outlined a large-scale plan to reduce dependence on American technologies, which they increasingly see as a threat to the region's economic future and geopolitical security amid difficult relations with the administration of [US President Donald] Trump," the article says.
European officials have outlined the need for increased government involvement in the regional technology industry "to accelerate the construction of data centers and the revival of the semiconductor industry."
The new EU plan also provides incentives for European governments and businesses to purchase technology from domestic suppliers, primarily in areas critical to security.
"European leaders are increasingly concerned about the dependence on American technology in areas such as artificial intelligence, cloud computing and semiconductors," the newspaper writes.
According to the newspaper, many Europeans fear that dependence on the United States creates a so-called "emergency switch" that the Trump administration or future US presidents may use to block access to critical technologies.
According to the newspaper, European officials said that the plan is not aimed at replacing American technology, but at "increasing sustainability" — so that governments and companies in the region do not depend on a single foreign supplier.
The Politico newspaper reported on May 2 that the recent decisions of the American leader confirmed his desire to "punish" Europe, rather than make compromises that seem less and less possible. It was noted that Trump's recent behavior has made the Europeans understand the need to gain independence from the United States, but they recognize that the process of reducing dependence on Washington is too slow.
