The US administration supports the removal of Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel from power as part of possible agreements between Washington and Havana. This was reported on May 23 by the Financial Times (FT) newspaper.

"Current and former U.S. officials say that the administration insists on removing Miguel Diaz-Canel, President of Cuba, from power as part of any agreement," the publication says.

According to the newspaper, the possible departure of Diaz-Canel is considered by the American side as a symbolic change in Cuba's political course, she added.Газета.Ru ".

The Financial Times also noted that US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, known for his tough stance towards the Cuban authorities, advocated a more gradual approach and economic transformation at the beginning of the negotiation process. However, in recent weeks, the rhetoric of the American side has become tougher amid dissatisfaction with the pace of negotiations.

Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez Parrilla said on May 22 that Rubio was trying to provoke military aggression against the country. He stated that Cuba has never been a threat to U.S. security. Rodriguez stressed that the main reason for the crisis on the island was the tightening of sanctions by the United States.

Rubio said on May 21 that Washington would prefer to resolve relations with Cuba through diplomatic means, but the likelihood of such a scenario currently remains low. He added that the United States is ready for dialogue if the Cuban authorities change their position, but for now Washington intends to continue its policy of pressure on Havana.
