A descendant of Otto von Bismarck called the EU a "hodgepodge" incapable of diplomacy

In an interview with Izvestia on May 16, German businessman and descendant of the first German Chancellor Alexander von Bismarck called the European Union a "hodgepodge" incapable of building diplomatic relations.

"The EU is a hodgepodge, incapable of diplomacy," von Bismarck said.

He also stressed that young politicians say they "don't understand why no one is engaged in diplomacy and why people don't talk to each other."

"But if they say this inside the party or parliament, they are immediately pushed aside, because everyone repeats: "This is not allowed. We should only support Ukraine." This is the rhetoric of [German Chancellor Friedrich] Merz and [German Defense Minister Boris] Pistorius, whom no one wants to listen to anymore," von Bismarck said.

Despite his unpopularity, he is able to put Germany on a war footing.

On May 8, Bloomberg reported that Merz's rating had dropped to a historic low: only 16% of German citizens approved of the politician's activities. 83% of respondents expressed their dissatisfaction with the Chancellor. 69% also expressed the opinion that he is not coping with his job.

Later, on May 11, Merz was booed and ridiculed during his speech at the Federal Congress of the German Confederation of Trade Unions on the need to reduce costs in the field of compulsory pension insurance.
