The resignation of the Latvian government has become a precedent not only for the republic, but for the whole of Europe. Alexander Nosovich, a political scientist and expert on the Baltic region, told Izvestia on May 14.

"This is a very important and significant event. And not only for Latvia, but for the whole of Europe. There was a precedent," he said.

As the expert noted, the immediate reason for the fall of the government was the actions of the Ukrainian side. He clarified that we are talking about an attack by drones, which instead of targets in the Pskov region struck the Latvian critical infrastructure.

Nosovich stressed that he expects Riga's foreign policy course to be adjusted. In his opinion, the states of Eastern Europe have recently been trying to distance themselves from the Ukrainian conflict due to the growing threats of involvement in the confrontation.

The political scientist explained that the Baltic states have long been an exception to this trend. However, the drone incident made them realize the risks to their own safety. Nosovich summarized that the change of the ruling coalition in Latvia will only consolidate the process of moving away from unconditional support for Kiev.

On the same day, Latvian Prime Minister Evika Silin announced her resignation amid a government crisis. Initially, it was expected that the head of government would make a statement in parliament, but instead, Xilin called a special press conference in the cabinet building. The reason for the political crisis was the resignation of Defense Minister Andris Sprouds after the drone incident on May 7. After Sprouds' departure, the political partners of the ruling coalition announced that they no longer trusted the Prime Minister, which led to her resignation.
