- The former head of the Latvian Foreign Ministry said about the political chaos in the country
Latvia's government has fallen, and the country is now in political chaos. This was announced on May 14 in an interview with Izvestia by former Latvian Foreign Minister Janis Jurkans.
"The government has fallen. We don't know what the new government will be like, because so many parties are rushing to power because we have elections in October," he said.
Yurkans stressed that the political future of the country will largely depend on the new government, but the decision on who will form it remains with the president of the Baltic country, Edgar Rinkevich.
Earlier in the day, Latvian Prime Minister Evika Silin announced her resignation amid a government crisis. Initially, it was expected that the head of government would make a statement in parliament, but instead, Xilin called a special press conference in the cabinet building. The reason for the political crisis was the resignation of Defense Minister Andris Sprouds after the drone incident on May 7. After Sprouds' departure, the political partners of the ruling coalition declared that they no longer trusted the Prime Minister, which led to her resignation.
