Zakharova called Callas' statements beyond the scope of the mandate.
The statements about Russia made by the head of the European Diplomacy, Kaya Kallas, are outside her mandate, and also raise questions about her potential beneficiaries. This was announced on May 13 by the official representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation Maria Zakharova.
"It's obvious that someone is writing to her <...>, someone is directing her somewhere, it's understandable. But no one can figure out who commissioned her to do this. Do you know why they can't understand it? Because these statements that she makes are outside her mandate. She has no right to say such things," she said on Sputnik radio.
The diplomat added that there is a growing number of people inside the European Union (EU) who are asking questions about whose interests Callas represents. The representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry compared the situation with the public appearances of the head of EU diplomacy with the famous puppet show called the Muppet Show. According to her, what is happening resembles various characters from this program — "piglets, frogs, boys and girls" — who open their mouths with the help of the actor who created them.
Two days earlier, Italian journalist Thomas Fasi, commenting on Callas' initial appointment to his post, linked him to the desire of European politicians to lobby their military interests and continue the conflict with Russia. On the same day, journalist Chay Bose from Ireland called the head of the European diplomacy "imbecile."
On April 24, Zakharova proposed calling Callas the EU's low representative for diplomacy. She also pointed out that Brussels officials are expanding the European Union not for the sake of the welfare of new member states, but for their own selfish interests.
