Putin named the reason for Finland's accession to NATO
Finland joined the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) in the hope of profiting from Russia's defeat to the West. This was announced on May 9 by Russian President Vladimir Putin.
"Why did Finland join NATO? Did we have any territorial disputes with Finland? No! Everything was decided a long time ago. <...> We were hoping that everything would collapse here, but here they are somehow clap-clap. It means that they are already building a border there along the Sister River," the Russian leader said at a press conference.
Putin noted that territorial disputes between Moscow and Helsinki had long been resolved, and the Finnish leadership "understood this perfectly well."
On April 23, the Finnish Ministry of Defense announced that the government had submitted to parliament a proposal to allow the import and storage of nuclear weapons for the purpose of defending the country within the framework of cooperation with NATO. On May 4, the office of the Security Council of the Russian Federation announced that after the republic joined the alliance in 2023, the scale of exercises near the border with Russia increased significantly.
