Over the past day, 270 road accidents have occurred on Russian roads, in which 16 people were killed and 314 injured. 12 of the dead were passengers and drivers. This was reported to Izvestia on May 7 by the State Traffic Inspectorate of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia.

Nine accidents involving buses were recorded, in which there were no fatalities, however, 23 road users, including two children, required medical assistance. Six bus accidents were caused by traffic violations committed by their drivers.

So, in the Republic of Mordovia, in the evening, on 1 km of the Saransk—Kachkurovo regional highway, a 51-year-old driver of a suburban shuttle bus with 21 passengers in the cabin drove off the road, after which the vehicle overturned. As a result of the accident, two bus passengers were hospitalized with injuries, and 13 more passengers received minor injuries. After receiving medical treatment, they were referred for outpatient treatment.

The State Traffic Inspectorate reminded bus drivers that the life and health of their passengers during transportation depends entirely on the skills, driving experience, well-being and a law-abiding person at the wheel. You should always go out on a work shift well rested and healthy, and before leaving for the route it is necessary to check the technical condition of the entrusted vehicles.

As a result of 68 accidents, 17 of which occurred at pedestrian crossings and 51 outside their area of operation, four pedestrians were killed, and 67 more were injured in various degrees of severity. Among the injured were 25 child pedestrians, 24 of whom were injured when crossing the roadway in unintended places. 43 accidents involving minors were also registered, as a result of which 45 young road users were injured, including three passengers, 12 child drivers, two of whom were driving motor vehicles. There are no dead children.

The State Traffic Inspectorate drew parents' attention to the need to ensure the maximum safety of their children during the spring season, a period of the year when they start spending a lot of time on the street, and as a result, they are more likely to get into car accidents. Lack of control over children's behavior and leisure activities often leads to injury or even death of young road users. Parents were advised to have explanatory conversations with their children about the rules of safe participation in traffic as a pedestrian, as well as trips on personal mobility equipment, bicycles and scooters, paying special attention to the need to dismount when crossing the roadway at a pedestrian crossing.

The ministry recalled that, according to the requirements of the traffic rules, pedestrian road users must cross the roadway at pedestrian crossings, and in their absence — at intersections along sidewalks or roadsides. At unregulated pedestrian crossings, pedestrians can enter the roadway only after they assess the distance to approaching vehicles, their speed, and make sure that the crossing will be safe for them. When crossing roads and driving along roadsides or the edge of the carriageway at night or in conditions of insufficient visibility, pedestrians are advised, and outside populated areas they are required to carry objects with retroreflective elements and ensure that these objects are visible to drivers of vehicles.

"In turn, motorists should be extremely careful when approaching pedestrian crossings, especially unregulated ones. Never rush through them as quickly as possible, thereby interfering with other road users, including pedestrians. Be collected and careful, leaving yourself plenty of time to react adequately to a possible change in the traffic situation at any moment. Reduce your speed as much as possible until the vehicle stops completely in order to allow pedestrians to pass," said Police Colonel Sergey Hrantskevich, head of the Department for Road Safety Promotion and Prevention of Child traffic Injuries at the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Russian Federation.

According to the results of the first quarter of 2026, the number of road accidents in Moscow decreased by 16% compared to last year, and the death toll by 40%. As it was clarified on April 30, in just three months, 1,430 accidents were recorded in the capital, in which 36 people were killed and 1,708 injured.
