In Russia, omens have long been given special importance. They were used to judge the weather, when to sow and harvest, and what to expect in the future. Therefore, every day of the national calendar was full of rituals and superstitions. Izvestia tells about the popular signs of May 7 and what church holidays are celebrated on this day.

Folk signs for May 7

In the national calendar, Evseev Day is celebrated on May 7. In Russia, this holiday was associated with the final awakening of spring and the transition of nature to active growth. It was believed that by this time the earth had already warmed up sufficiently, which meant that it was possible to start basic agricultural work. The peasants closely monitored the weather and the condition of the soil, because the future harvest depended on it.

In the old days, people began to work actively in the field on Yevsey: they sowed oats, barley and other spring crops. There were also ritual actions: peasants could sprinkle fields with holy water to protect crops from bad weather and pests. On this day, the women were doing household chores and preparing treats for the workers. It was considered important to start the day with prayer in order to receive a blessing for work. In some regions, it was customary to treat neighbors and travelers, which symbolized goodwill and prosperity. In the evening, families gathered together, discussing plans for the planting season.

Nature observations on this day helped predict the weather for the coming weeks. For example, if the morning was clear and quiet, they expected a warm and fruitful summer. And if the wind picked up in the evening, it was considered a harbinger of changeable weather. They also paid attention to the behavior of birds and insects.

Other signs of the day:

  • Birds fly low to the rain;
  • Thunder is thundering — the summer will be fertile;
  • lots of dew in the morning — for clear weather;
  • bees actively fly out of the hives to get warm;
  • Clouds are moving rapidly across the sky, causing the weather to worsen.

What not to do on May 7

On Evseev Day, there were certain prohibitions and superstitions associated with fears of upsetting the natural balance and bringing bad luck. Our ancestors believed that on this day it is important to remain calm and not get into conflicts, otherwise the whole season will be spent in quarrels. They also avoided laziness, as they believed that inaction could lead to crop failure.

What else can not be done on May 7:

  • Holding grudges against loved ones can lead to protracted conflicts.;
  • Quarreling and raising your voice can lead to business failures;
  • making empty promises leads to a loss of trust and respect.;
  • to start risky business — they will end in failure;
  • to refuse help leads to loss of well—being;
  • Overeating and overuse can lead to poor health.

What is the church holiday on May 7?

On May 7, the Orthodox Church honors the memory of the holy Martyr Sava Stratelates and 70 soldiers with him. Also on this date, they remember St. Sava of the Caves, who labored in the Nearby Caves of the Kiev Pechersk Lavra and saints named Eusebius, for example, the Martyr Eusebius of Nicomedia.

Saint Sava Stratelates lived in the 3rd century and was a military commander in the Roman Empire. He was distinguished not only by his military prowess, but also by his deep faith in Christ. Despite his high position, Savva openly professed Christianity, helped those in need and supported persecuted believers. For this, he was subjected to severe tortures. Along with him, 70 soldiers suffered, who, having seen his steadfastness, also converted to Christianity. All of them were martyred without renouncing their faith.

Saint Sava of the Caves labored in the Kiev Pechersk Lavra and became famous for his strict austerities. He lived in seclusion, spending his days in prayer and fasting. His life was an example of complete renunciation of worldly goods for the sake of spiritual perfection. His contemporaries noted his humility and meekness. After his death, the monk was canonized, and his relics began to be revered by the faithful.

The Orthodox Church also remembers the Martyr Eusebius of Nicomedia. He lived during the era of persecution of Christians under Emperor Diocletian and openly professed his faith, despite the threat of punishment. According to legend, Eusebius refused to sacrifice to idols, for which he was severely tortured and executed. His feat became an example of unshakeable faith and fidelity to Christ even in the face of death. In the church tradition, this day reminds believers of spiritual strength and willingness to defend their beliefs.

Prayers on May 7

Believers turn to Saint Sava Stratelates with prayers for protection, strengthening of faith and help in difficult life situations. He is asked for courage and perseverance in the face of challenges. They pray to the Martyr Eusebius of Nicomedia for the gift of courage in faith, for protection from persecutors and enemies, and for strength for hard work. They pray to St. Sava of the Caves for spiritual purification, humility and inner peace. They are also asked about the health and well-being of their loved ones. It is believed that their intercession helps to find peace of mind and strengthen faith.

Prayer to the Holy Martyr Savva Stratelates

"O holy servant of God, Martyr Savva! Having labored with a good deed on earth, you have perceived in heaven the crown of righteousness, which the Lord has prepared for all who love Him. Looking at your holy image, we rejoice at the glorious end of your residence and honor your holy memory. But you, standing before the Throne of God, accept our supplications and offer them to the All-merciful God, that He may forgive us every sin and help us against the wiles of the devil, so that, having been delivered from sorrows, diseases, troubles and misfortunes, and all evil, we may live piously and righteously in our present age and be worthy of your intercession, even if we are unworthy. May you see the good in the lands of the living, glorifying God, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, now and for ever and ever. Amen to that."

Prayer to the Martyr Eusebius of Nicomedia

Troparion

Kontakion

"Strengthen with your soul according to faith, O saints, who accept suffering by fire, and two sufferers in darkness who were born of a Virgin: accept our burnt offerings for You, like the gifts of the Persian kings, gold, myrrh, and lebanon, Eternal God."

Greatness

"We magnify you, holy passion-bearers, and honor your honorable sufferings, which you have endured for Christ."

Prayer to all the Venerable Fathers of Kiev Caves

"Our venerable and God-bearing fathers Anthony and Theodosius, and all the venerable Caves, the luminaries of the earth, who gloriously shone from the dark places of caves into the Russian lands, and with these many luminous angels of your noble life they filled the stars, and with the splendors of the whole universe with high virtues and divine miracles, they surprised, and now with the mortal west carnally for a time into the grave Having set down the Sun of Righteousness with Christ, you who are righteous are enlightened like the sun in the Kingdom of Heaven: when your prayer beams to God for your Fatherland, do not forget us, who are always your prayer books, in the night of passion and tribulation, looking down on grace from above; that in the light of your virtuous life you may walk right Let us be vouchsafed to see the light of God's inviolable glory, praising Him with you forever and ever. Amen to that."

Earlier, Izvestia told what they pray to the Great Martyr George the Victorious.
