At the end of spring, Orthodox believers honor the memory of Matrona of Moscow, one of the most revered saints of the 20th century. Every year, on May 2, the day of her repose is celebrated, gathering thousands of pilgrims in temples across the country. In 2026, the date falls on a Saturday. Where you can worship the saint and what prayers are read on this day — in the material of Izvestia.

The Life and testimonies of Matrona of Moscow's help

Matrona of Moscow (in the world Matrona Dmitrievna Nikonova) was born in 1881 in the Tula province in a family of poor peasants. Since birth, she was deprived of sight, however, according to the memoirs of her contemporaries, she possessed a special spiritual sensitivity. Already in childhood, the girl showed the gift of foresight, predicted events and helped people with advice.

Over time, people started coming to her for support. The saint accepted everyone without exception. She did not accept payment for her help, considering her gift to be a service to God and people. Despite severe physical limitations, Matrona maintained mental clarity and inner fortitude. People noted her calmness and confidence, which were transmitted to others.

After the revolution, when the persecution of the church began, Matrona moved to Moscow, where she continued to receive people until her death. Her name is associated with many testimonies of miracles and healings, including help with serious illnesses. There is also evidence of her ability to anticipate future events and warn of dangers.

After Matrona's death in 1952, the veneration of the saint did not stop, and the number of testimonies of help continued to grow. In 1999, the Russian Orthodox Church canonized Matrona of Moscow, officially recognizing her as a saint. From that moment on, her veneration became ecclesiastical. Today, Matrona of Moscow is considered one of the most revered saints of our time.
