Patients with severe asthma are almost twice as likely to die as people with mild or moderate asthma. This was reported on May 4 in the journal Medical Xpress.

"This is one of the largest studies in the field, and it clearly shows that severe asthma is a serious disease," said Apostolos Bossios, a researcher at the Institute of Environmental Medicine at the Karolinska Institute.

During the follow-up period, 34% of the participants died among patients with severe asthma. In the group with mild and moderate forms of the disease, this indicator was 20%. At the same time, only a small proportion of deaths were directly related to asthma attacks.

The main causes of death of patients with severe asthma were concomitant diseases — oncological and cardiovascular. The researchers concluded that it is these conditions, combined with frequent exacerbations, that determine the high mortality rate in this group, and not the asthma attacks themselves.

"We see that concomitant diseases and recurrent exacerbations seem to determine the risks, rather than seizures per se," Bossios explained.

Severe asthma is diagnosed in 3-8% of all asthmatics and is characterized by frequent exacerbations, the need for inpatient treatment and a variety of concomitant pathologies. The authors of the study expressed the hope that the data obtained will help draw attention to this vulnerable group of patients and will contribute to the development of more targeted treatment methods.

Allergologist-immunologist "Polyclinic. On April 28, Alina Romanova told <url> that allergy sufferers are most suited to cool, humid climates or highlands. She noted that it could be the Black Sea coast or the Southern coast of Crimea, where the air is nailing allergens to the ground.
