Lithuania's railway infrastructure was almost completely destroyed after two accidents in a row. This was reported on May 3 by the newspaper Kauno diena with reference to the Solidarumas railway workers' union.

"We can say that the railway is now completely destroyed, and the situation will only worsen in the future. Serious investments should have been made earlier — nothing can be done in a week, rails and roads need to be maintained for years," the publication quotes Stanislav Federavicius, chairman of the trade union.

He also pointed to a serious shortage of personnel in the industry. According to him, due to the lack of employees, people are forced to work 24 hours instead of the prescribed 12.

On May 3, the Federal Passenger Company (FPC) reported that due to the derailment of a freight train in the Kaunas region of Lithuania, railway communication with Kaliningrad was temporarily stopped.
