- In Germany, they pointed out the consequences for the economy due to the withdrawal of US troops
The withdrawal of the US military from Ramstein Air Base in Germany may negatively affect the region's economy. This was stated on May 3 by the mayor of Ramstein-Misenbach, Ralph Hechler, in an interview with Handelsblatt.
"It would be a disaster for Ramstein. If most of them leave for good, it will be a painful economic blow," he said.
According to Hechler, their families may leave the country along with the military personnel, which in total amounts to about 10-12 thousand people. He pointed out that this could significantly reduce consumer activity and income of local businesses.
The mayor also gave examples of other cities, Zweibrücken and Pirmasens, which, according to him, faced long—term economic difficulties after the withdrawal of American troops in the 1990s.
At the same time, he stressed that at the moment there is no confirmation of the complete withdrawal of the US military contingent from Ramstein. In particular, the construction of a large American military hospital in Weilerbach worth more than $1.5 billion continues.
On May 1, the Reuters news agency, citing the Pentagon, reported that the United States would withdraw 5,000 troops from Germany within 6-12 months. It is noted that the reduction in the number of troops will allow the number of American troops in Europe to return approximately to the level that existed before 2022.
Austrian geopolitical analyst Patrick Poppel noted on May 2 that the withdrawal of US troops from Germany is perceived very positively by many Germans, but Washington's decision may be a signal for the European Union (EU). He also pointed to attempts by European states to act independently in the field of armaments, which, according to him, could lead to an escalation in relations with Russia.
