Car prices in Russia have tripled in 12 years
If in 2014 the average price of a new passenger car was 1.2 million rubles, by now it has reached 3.79 million rubles. Thus, in 12 years, new cars have more than tripled in price (+216%), said Sergey Tselikov, director of the Autostat analytical agency, on April 29, who shared calculations based on prices on three classifieds.
Prices for used cars increased in the same way during this period (+210%) — from 435 thousand to 1.35 million rubles.
The expert recalled that in 2014, sanctions began to be imposed on Russia, and at the end of the year, the ruble devalued, and car prices began to rise in 2015. The pandemic of 2020-2021 became the second powerful impetus to the price increase, he noted. In the spring of 2022, drastic changes took place in the Russian market, when the supply of cars of familiar brands stopped, stock prices rose sharply, and new Chinese brands began to appear en masse.
"I would also like to note that in the last couple of years, car prices (both new and used) "calmed down". Apparently, the ratio between purchasing power and car prices is at its limit. In my opinion, the next boost to the price increase will be another devaluation of the ruble. Because the currency component in the price of a car is very high. Even in Russian-built cars. But in the current situation, the ruble is stronger than ever," Tselikov added in his Telegram channel.
Earlier in the day, it was reported that stopping the decrease in the volume of effluents in the warehouses of dealers and distributors of cars in Russia means that dealers no longer need emergency sales, and prices for new cars may rise. Irina Frank, CEO of Frank Auto, told Izvestia about this.
