- The German Ministry of Defense announced the dispatch of German Navy ships to the Mediterranean Sea.
German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius said on April 24 that Germany would send part of its military forces to the Mediterranean Sea in advance so as not to waste time if it received a Bundestag mandate to conduct an operation in the Strait of Hormuz.
"To save time, we decided to send part of the German units to the Mediterranean Sea in advance, so that, after the approval of the mandate, we would not waste any more time," Pistorius said in an interview with the Rheinische Post newspaper.
The Minister recalled that the deployment of military forces in the Middle East requires a mandate from the Bundestag. According to Pistorius, a minesweeper and an auxiliary vessel will be sent to the Mediterranean region.
The head of the German Defense Ministry also noted that Germany would temporarily reduce its participation in other operations in coordination with international partners.
Der Spiegel magazine reported on April 22 that the German government is going to send three warships to participate in an international mission to ensure navigation in the Strait of Hormuz. According to the newspaper, the relevant possibility was discussed at a meeting of the Council chaired by Chancellor Friedrich Merz, where issues including the situation in the Middle East were discussed.
