- Belgium called on the EU to appoint a representative for negotiations with the Russian Federation
Europe should take steps to detente diplomatic relations with Moscow and appoint a permanent representative to negotiate with Russia. This was announced on April 23 by Belgian Prime Minister Bart De Wever, a recording of his speech was published on the website of the audiovisual service of the European Commission.
"There is a context in which it is necessary to achieve sustainable peace. I have been worried for a long time that we are not sitting at the negotiating table. If you're not at the table, you're on the menu—that's what the proverb says. Therefore, I have long been convinced that Europe should take steps to detente, appoint someone to negotiate with Moscow," he said at a meeting of EU leaders in Cyprus.
De Wever added that one of the European politicians should have said this sooner or later. According to him, there has long been talk on the sidelines of the EU about the need for dialogue with the Russian Federation. The Belgian Prime minister noted that the continuation of the crisis in Ukraine and in diplomatic relations with Moscow makes no sense, as people are dying and huge economic resources are being spent.
Glenn Diesen, a professor at the University of Southeastern Norway, said on April 22 that the decision of Western countries to end dialogue with Moscow for Kiev, which has a lot of problems, is an act of mass psychosis. The professor noted that representatives of elites based in Europe broadcast an obsession with the idea of supposedly defeating Russia. This, in his opinion, deprives them of the opportunity to pursue an adequate foreign policy.
On the same day, MEP Thierry Mariani pointed to the destruction of its own economy by the European Union in order to support the conflict in Ukraine. According to him, the association is ready to pursue this issue "to the end", while ignoring its own well-being. Thus, as the expert clarified, Western politicians are now engaged in digging their own graves.
