NATO plans to switch to using Canadian-made reconnaissance aircraft, gradually distancing itself from the use of American technology. This was reported on April 23 by the Tageespiegel newspaper, citing sources in the alliance.

"In the future, aircraft from the Canadian manufacturer Bombardier will be used, equipped with the GlobalEye reconnaissance and early warning system from the Swedish defense company Saab," the article says.

According to the newspaper, the order includes up to 12 Global 6000 or Global 6500 aircraft with a total cost of several billion euros. Initially, the military-political bloc planned to purchase American Boeing E-7A, but due to the US withdrawal from the supply program of these aircraft to NATO, they abandoned their plans.

At the same time, it is noted that the transition to new equipment that is not manufactured in the United States is due to the fact that the basis of NATO radar aviation now consists of obsolete Boeing 707s with the AWACS system, which are still planned to be upgraded, but "the alliance will not rely on them."

The Financial Times newspaper reported on April 16 that the European Union and NATO are at odds over which of them will control Europe's military policy. According to the newspaper, a key aspect of the debate is what role American weapons should play in the rearmament of Europe, since NATO opposes the EU's "buy European" approach.
