The cold weather that has come to Central Russia will last at least six days, meteorologists told Izvestia. During this time, the air temperature is expected to be below the climatic norm. And heavy snowfalls began in the Volga region, the Far East and the Urals. In the Sverdlovsk region, two months of precipitation may fall in just a day or two, forecasters warn. What is the reason for such a weather anomaly and how it can affect people with chronic diseases — in the Izvestia article.

Cold weather in the central regions of Russia

Monday, April 20, was the first day of a negative weather anomaly observed in Central Russia. In Moscow, the air temperature did not rise above +6 degrees during the day and +2 degrees at night, and wind gusts reached 15 m/s, Tatyana Pozdnyakova, a leading specialist at the Meteonosti news agency, told Izvestia. According to her, it will get warmer in the capital only on Wednesday, when the daytime temperature will be +10...+12 degrees, but it is still below the climatic norm.

— The nights will remain as cool as the day before. And by Saturday, the air temperature will be 3-4 degrees below normal," the expert said. — Friday will be the most unfavorable day due to rains. The negative anomaly is likely to persist until the end of the month.

On Monday, in some areas of Moscow (for example, in Tushino) and the Moscow region, even a little snow fell, but it quickly melted.

But in the Sverdlovsk Region, in the north of the Tyumen Region and in the south of Kamchatka, heavy snowfalls are expected in the next three days, Alexander Shuvalov, head of the Meteo forecasting center, told Izvestia.

— In the Urals, everything happens at the junction of two very contrasting air masses. If the air temperature in the north of the Sverdlovsk region is from 0 to -5, then in the south it is up to +15 degrees Celsius. The temperature contrast is what causes precipitation. As a result, two months of precipitation may fall in the region in the coming days," the meteorologist explained.

According to the Hydrometeorological Center of Russia, the southern cyclone and its associated frontal system are moving eastward through the Ural Ridge.

"Under its influence, precipitation is forecast in most of the Ural region and in the southern regions of Siberia — heavy in places in the Urals," the report says.

Ice and strong winds are expected in some areas, with gusts up to 13-18 m/s.

Bad weather in the regions

Heavy snowfalls have paralyzed traffic on the Chita-Zabaikalsk federal highway in Transbaikalia. 13 buses, 23 trucks and 29 passenger cars got into a snow jam, the press service of the Ministry of Emergency Situations of the region reported. Rescuers evacuated more than 250 people, including 28 children.

Also in Transbaikalia, police officers rescued a man from snow captivity, the press service of the Russian Interior Ministry reported. The ministry clarified that the car was covered with snow, the driver was in a semi-conscious state due to oxygen starvation. The police dug up the car, and the man was helped.

Snowfall also began in Mari El and the Kirov region. The Telegram channel "Amateur Meteorology in Kirov", based on weather forecast models, suggested that by the morning of April 22, a snow cover up to 20 cm high would form in the region. Including in the capital of the region, according to the most likely scenario, 10-15 cm of snow will fall.

A yellow weather hazard level has been declared in Mari El due to snowfall. According to Anton Trudinov, acting Mayor of Yoshkar-Ola, the city's machinery, which was already being prepared for spring work, was promptly re-equipped for the winter season.

"Snow has covered everything around, but many have already managed to change into summer tires and mentally say goodbye to the cold," he wrote on social networks.

Who is at risk

The deterioration of the weather can have a bad effect on people with heart failure, hypertension, anemia and other chronic diseases, therapist Andrey Kondrakhin told Izvestia.

— In cold weather, immunity drops very much. People with venous diseases can feel their condition worsen, because when they are cold, their blood circulates worse," the doctor said.

People with chronic diseases are twice as likely to suffer a cold, says doctor Vladimir Bolibok.

— People with arthritis will have more joint pain due to temperature fluctuations. Also, people suffering from cardiovascular diseases will experience increased shortness of breath, and those with chronic bronchitis will produce more sputum when coughing," he said.

Andrei Kondrakhin stressed that, in addition to colds, people are at risk of hypothermia.

— A person gets hypothermia gradually. The first thing you should pay attention to is cold limbs, ears, and nose. This is the first signal that the body is not coping and needs to keep warm urgently," the expert noted.

Hot broth and warm drinks help keep your body warm.

— You don't need to lean on coffee and tea, because they stimulate the work of the cardiovascular system, which is overloaded in cold conditions, - said the expert.

With severe frostbite, a person develops blisters, in which case it is necessary to consult a doctor immediately.

Motorists are advised to keep a supply of warm clothes, water and snacks in the car, regardless of the time of year, Alexander Starostin, executive director of the Fire Center Group of companies and safety expert, told Izvestia.

"It just has to be in the car at all times, because the car can break down in good weather and you will need to wait for help for some time," the expert noted.

Alexander Starostin stressed that in case of snow drifts, drivers need to keep the cabin warm, while taking into account their fuel supply.

— Fuel should be used wisely so that it is enough until the road is cleared, — the expert explained. — You also need to make sure that the wind does not carry exhaust gases into the cabin, so that poisoning by gorenje products does not occur.

Drivers are not advised to turn off their parking lights, Alexander Starostin said. The car should be visible to other road users, including the emergency services who will be clearing the road, he said.
