- The Trump administration will begin accepting applications for the refund of $166 billion in duties.
The administration of US President Donald Trump begins the procedure for the refund of import duties worth more than $ 166 billion after the decision of the Supreme Court. This was reported by The New York Times (NYT) on April 20.
"A year ago, the president promised that global tariffs would "make America rich." However, the Supreme Court ordered the government to return the money to the importers," the publication says.
Starting on Monday, companies can apply for refunds along with interest. Only organizations that have officially paid the fees are eligible for a refund. The White House declined to say whether it would try to go to court again to stop some or all of the refunds.
On February 21, the American leader signed a law according to which a 10% duty on exports of goods to the United States will be imposed on all countries. The White House added that tariffs on goods will be imposed for 150 days, and some categories will not be subject to duties at all. Among them are a number of metals, energy carriers, some minerals, and some pharmaceuticals.
With his tariff policy, Trump has reduced the country's trade with almost 40% of the world's countries. Thus, in East Asia, trade fell the most with Laos (-54%), Brunei (-24.2%) and China (-23.2%). In Central Asia — with Mongolia (-43.6%), Tajikistan (-29.3%) and Kazakhstan (-15.7%). In the Middle East, the decline affected Yemen (-55.9%) and Iran (-38.5%).
