The strong dependence of countries on American artificial intelligence (AI) tools may lead to a new form of colonization. This was reported on April 19 by the Japanese newspaper Nikkei.

"As the AI tools developed in the United States <...> increase their global influence, there is a growing discussion in Europe and other countries that uncritical use of American platforms carries strategic risks. Huge amounts of data, knowledge, and capital are being channeled to companies and countries that dominate this field, which raises the specter of a new form of colonization," the article says.

The authors of the material added that for the first time such concerns appeared among politicians at a closed session of the Munich Security Conference, held in February this year. The term "AI colonization," as reported by Nikkei, refers to the danger that countries dependent on U.S.-developed AI may deepen this dependence to such an extent that they will have no alternatives and will fall into a similar colonial technological dependence on the United States.

Bloomberg reported on April 7 that American companies OpenAI, Anthropic and Google have begun working together to limit Chinese competitors who extract results from advanced artificial intelligence models. The rare collaboration underscores the seriousness of American AI companies' concerns. Some users, especially in China, create imitation versions of American goods, which can lower their price, distract customers and "pose a threat to national security."
