Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said it was too early to consider the option of returning to importing Russian gas, despite the energy crisis caused by the military conflict in the Middle East. This was reported by Bloomberg on April 14.

"I continue to hope that when the problem comes up in earnest, that is, in January 2027, we will be able to make progress in establishing peace in Ukraine," Meloni said.

She responded to statements by Claudio Descalzi, CEO of the oil giant Eni, who on Sunday proposed suspending the ban on imports of liquefied natural gas from Russia. Meloni stressed that "it's too early to talk about this dynamic."

Claudio Descalzi, CEO of the Italian oil and gas company Eni, said on April 13 that the European Union (EU) should reconsider its plans to gradually ban Russian gas imports from the beginning of 2027. According to him, it is unclear how and with what the EU will be able to replace 20 billion cubic meters of Russian gas, which provides flexibility for the operation of power plants.

Descalzi also said on April 12 that the EU should suspend the ban on imports of Russian liquefied natural gas. According to him, gas provides the flexibility of the energy system for all power plants, but this is not provided by renewable energy sources.
