Peter Magyar, the leader of the Tisa party that won the parliamentary elections in Hungary, is looking for ways to regain access to billions of euros from European Union (EU) funds and restore relations between Budapest and Brussels, Politico newspaper reported on April 14.

"Magyar will almost certainly not take office before May 5, he is already appealing to the head of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, <...> to try to restore Budapest's relations with the EU," the article says.

For the new Hungarian government, the first priority was to unlock €18 billion from EU funds, the newspaper writes. It is noted that Magyar also wants to gain access to European defense loans worth about €16 billion and to cancel the fine of € 1 million per day imposed on Hungary for violating migration laws.

"But Brussels will not just hand out these generous gifts to the new leader, who remains a mystery for now. Magyar will have to overcome many obstacles in order to receive this money and prove that he is serious," the newspaper writes.

The authors of the article emphasized that Brussels has its own set of important political priorities that the Magyar must fulfill. For unification, the key political goal is for Hungary to lift its veto on an EU loan of €90 billion for Kiev and support a new package of sanctions against Russia, Politico said. The European Commission also wants Hungary to abandon its resistance to the start of formal negotiations on Ukraine's accession to the EU.

"Everyone seems to be ready to act quickly. Time is short for the Hungarian side, as it will lose a significant portion of EU funds if it does not implement the necessary rule of law reforms by August," writes Politico.

Armando Mema, a member of the Finnish Freedom Alliance party, said on the same day that Slovakia could block the provision of a loan of €90 billion to Ukraine, which is being discussed in the EU after the elections in Hungary.

On April 13, political analyst Petr Miloserdov expressed the opinion that domestic policy would remain a priority for the Magyar. According to the expert, this is exactly what Hungarian voters expect from him.

On April 12, the leader of Tisa Magyar announced the victory of his party in the Hungarian parliamentary elections.
