The European Union (EU) should reconsider its plans to gradually ban Russian gas imports from the beginning of 2027. This was announced on April 13 by Claudio Descalzi, CEO of the Italian oil and gas company Eni, according to the Reuters news agency.

In his speech at the event, which was organized by the ruling League party, Descalzi said it was unclear how and with what the EU would be able to replace 20 billion cubic meters of Russian gas, which "provides vital flexibility for the operation of power plants in the country."

At the same time, Descalzi mentioned the Middle East conflict, the energy consequences of which have become "the most important event in the last 40 years."

The day before, Descalzi also said that the EU should suspend the ban on imports of Russian liquefied natural gas. According to him, gas provides the flexibility of the energy system for all power plants, but this is not provided by renewable energy sources.

In addition, Armando Mema, a member of the Finnish national conservative Freedom Alliance party, said on April 1 that the EU's plans to abandon oil and gas from Russia were "Eurosamicide." He admitted that the abandonment of Russian energy resources would lead to "mass poverty" of Europeans.
