Over the past weekend, 442 road accidents were recorded on Russian roads, in which 65 people were killed and 534 injured. 43 of the dead were drivers and passengers. This was reported to Izvestia on April 13 by the State Traffic Inspectorate of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia.

As a result of 106 accidents involving pedestrians, 22 people were killed, and 87 more were injured in various degrees of severity. Among the injured are 19 child pedestrians, 15 of whom were injured when crossing the roadway in unintended places. Of the total number of pedestrian incidents, 30 occurred at pedestrian crossings and 76 outside their area of operation.

In addition, over the weekend, 20 bus accidents were recorded on the roads of Russia, in which one person died, and 22 more road users needed medical help. The reason for 14 bus accidents were traffic violations committed by drivers of other vehicles. 64 accidents involving minors were registered, 76 young road users were injured, including 39 passengers and 11 motor transport drivers. One teenager driving a pit bike was killed.

So, in Vyazma (Smolensk region), late in the evening, a 15-year-old schoolboy on an off-road motorcycle, which is sports equipment, lost control, drove off the road and crashed into a tree. Despite the fact that the ninth-grader was riding a pit bike in a motorcycle helmet, he died. Due to his young age, he had not previously been issued a driver's license, and besides, he did not have the right to drive a sports car on public roads, the department noted.

The State Traffic Inspectorate called on parents to strictly monitor and stop attempts by children and teenagers to get behind the wheel on their own, as well as to exclude for them the possibility of accessing the keys of cars, mopeds and motorcycles, prohibiting the management of cars and motor vehicles without the appropriate right and driving skills. The lack of control over the behavior and leisure of minors on weekends often leads to injuries or deaths of young road users.

"Mopeds and motorcycles on public roads, if you have a driver's license, can be driven no earlier than the age of 16. Cross—country motorcycles and pitbikes, which are sports equipment, should be used only on specialized tracks and only for motorsport, including for young athletes. On ordinary roads, as well as in populated areas, their movement is strictly prohibited. We draw parents' attention to the administrative responsibility for allowing children who do not have a driver's license of the appropriate category to drive a car or motor vehicle," said Police Colonel Sergey Hrantskevich, head of the Department for Road Safety Promotion and Prevention of Child traffic Injuries at the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Russian Federation.

According to the results of January-February 2026, the number of accidents involving victims on the roads of Russia decreased by 8.2% compared to the same period last year. According to the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia on April 7, the number of people killed in road accidents during this period decreased by 13.2%, and the number of injured citizens decreased by 6.3%.
