- The Russian Orthodox Church declared the contradiction of luxurious cakes to the spirit of Easter
The Russian Orthodox Church (ROC) called on believers to observe moderation in preparation for the festive Easter table. This was announced on April 8 by Vakhtang Kipshidze, Deputy chairman of the Synodal Department for Church-Society Relations and the Media.
In an interview with RT, Kipshidze noted that buying expensive cakes distracts from the true meaning of the Resurrection of Christ. According to him, those who pursue gastronomic luxury deprive themselves of spiritual joy and victory over death. The representative of the Russian Orthodox Church compared this to going to the theater solely for the sake of sandwiches during the intermission, emphasizing that in this case a person misses the essence of what is happening.
"Christ is risen for everyone, regardless of their social status and wealth. A believer, even if he has the opportunity to buy a cake for 100 thousand rubles, most likely will not do this, but rather donate 100 cakes to Orthodox soldiers serving in the SVR zone," Kipshidze concluded.
He also added that the church has always advocated modesty, and luxury goods that are inaccessible to most parishioners directly contradict the spirit of the holiday.
Priest Theodorit Senchukov spoke about the restrictions on food for the Annunciation in 2026. He noted that fish is usually allowed on the feast of the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, but this year it falls on Holy Tuesday of Holy Week, the time of strict fasting, so fish is not eaten.
