Madagascar's law enforcement agencies have foiled a plot to assassinate the President of the Republic for the transitional period, Mikael Randrianirinu. This was reported by Bloomberg on April 3, citing a statement by the country's Attorney General Narindra Navalona Rakotuniain.

According to the report, charges of attempted murder and "a number of other crimes" were brought against 13 people, 11 of whom were detained. Army Colonel Patrick Rakotomonji, who is at large, has been named as one of the main organizers.

"Military officers are involved in this case, including a general who has already publicly expressed his readiness to commit a coup," the agency quoted the Prosecutor General as saying, without naming the general.

As evidence of the conspiracy, the Prosecutor General cited correspondence between members of the group. 20 billion Malagasy ariari (about $4.8 million) were also found in the accounts of the defendants. As some of the detainees admitted, the money was supposed to be used to implement a criminal plan.

In September last year, former President of Madagascar Andri Radzuelina announced the dissolution of the government amid protests in the country. Mass demonstrations have been taking place in the island nation since September 25 due to power and water supply disruptions, which later escalated into mass riots.

Later, on October 13, Radzuelina left the country on a French military aircraft. He arrived by helicopter on the island of Saint-Marie, and then boarded a French military plane, which was supposed to be heading to Dubai. Then the National Assembly of Madagascar voted to impeach the president of the country. After the impeachment, the military announced that they were taking power into their own hands. Colonel Mikael Randrianirina became the new head of state.
