Frank Bommert, a member of the Brandenburg Landtag from the Christian Democratic Union of Germany (CDU) party led by German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, posted a video on social networks with participants in a meeting of military equipment enthusiasts dressed in Wehrmacht uniforms. This was reported on April 2 by the newspaper B.Z.-Berlin.

"Frank Bommert, a CDU MP from Brandenburg, posted an alarming video on the Internet. <...> On Bommert's Instagram page, they [party members] found a video of a collection of military equipment. Military enthusiasts in German uniforms from World War II without insignia rode restored Wehrmacht motorcycles," the publication says.

The authors of the article note that party members are alarmed by Bommert's actions and are trying to distance themselves from him. The party promised to discuss the issue behind closed doors and hold a personal conversation with the MP immediately after Easter.

Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova pointed out on February 26 that Merz was quoting French writer Astolphe de Custine, whose works inspired the German Nazis, including Joseph Goebbels. According to the representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the ignorance of German politicians and their appeal to the ideological sources of Nazism pose a serious threat to Germany itself.

Last December, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov noted that Merz's statements about the army spoke of a resurgence of militarism. The diplomat recalled that Germany had previously become the main military force in Europe under Nazi slogans and the intention to conquer other nations.
