The urologist warned about the risks of frequent visits to baths
Excessive bathing and overheating of the testicles can lead to a decrease in male fertility. Ekaterina Makarova, a urologist and andrologist, told Izvestia on March 25.
According to the doctor, frequent visits to the sauna, especially with prolonged exposure to high temperatures, can significantly affect male reproductive health. She clarified that overheating of the testicles harms the epithelium of the spermatic cords, where spermatozoa are formed. This can lead to damage and mutations, and in some cases, to a decrease in sperm quality.
In addition, as men age, they face a natural process of accumulation of mutations in their spermatozoa, which also reduces their ability to conceive. In combination with other factors such as hormonal and inflammatory changes, smoking and bad habits, this leads to a significant decrease in fertility.
"After stopping going to the bath or sauna, the spermogram indicators may not recover, because the appearance of mutations indicates a reduced activity of the genes that are required to prevent them," the specialist explained.
According to the doctor, in order to restore reproductive function, a man will need long-term treatment, which can last from six to 12 months, and in some cases, special therapy will be required to improve sperm quality.
"If there are already abnormalities, you need to undergo a maximum diagnosis in order to understand their causes and take preventive measures, which include: cryopreservation of sperm while healthy, reduction of thermal stress, treatment of diseases that support disorders of spermatogenesis, lifestyle changes," the doctor concluded.
On the same day, the Ministry of Health reported that regular exposure to high temperatures on the body would be the reason for an in-depth examination of male reproductive health as part of a medical examination. If you answer "yes" to the questions of the anamnestic questionnaire No. 1 (do you regularly visit baths, saunas and other places with elevated ambient temperatures?) The patient is referred to the second stage of the DORZ for a basic sperm quality examination (spermogram) followed by a consultation with a urologist.
