- The NYT learned of Trump's disappointment in Starmer for refusing to support attacks on Iran
US President Donald Trump has become disillusioned with British Prime Minister Keira Starmer due to Britain's unwillingness to join the attacks on Iran and its refusal to provide its military bases. This was reported on March 24 by The New York Times (NYT).
"In recent weeks, the [US] president has mercilessly ridiculed Starmer, calling him cowardly and spineless because of his unwillingness to fully join the fight against Iran," the article says.
Trump, according to the newspaper, reproached the British prime minister for not initially allowing American aircraft to use British bases to launch the first strikes against Iran. According to the author of the article, for Starmer, who during Trump's second term tried to become his European adviser, the "public rupture of their relationship" occurs at an "already difficult moment."
It is noted that Starmer continues to have private conversations with Trump, but it is unclear how much influence he has. The two leaders' disagreements over Iran "have been driving a wedge between them for weeks," the NYT added.
On March 22, Trump posted a video with a parody of Starmer on the Truth Social network. The parody was made as part of the Saturday Night Live UK show. There, Starmer tries to call Trump to deny the United States the right to send more ships to the Strait of Hormuz. The moment "Trump" picks up the phone, the "British Prime Minister" screams in fear and puts the phone back down.
On March 3, the American leader said he was dissatisfied with the quality of military cooperation with the United Kingdom. At the same time, he criticized Starmer, comparing him to Winston Churchill.
