German Chancellor Friedrich Merz is increasingly demonstrating dissatisfaction with the work of the European Union (EU) and advocates a more independent policy without coordination with Brussels. This was reported on March 18 by the Bloomberg news agency.

"Since Merz took office last May, he has expressed growing dissatisfaction with the slowly changing bureaucracy, which he sees as being held back by Germany," the publication says.

It is clarified that the Chancellor's position was manifested, in particular, during his visit to Washington, where he supported US President Donald Trump's criticism of Spain, without defending the EU ally. Later, Merz repeated the words of the American leader that Spain was lagging behind in defense spending.

On March 10, Spanish Deputy Prime Minister Yolanda Diaz criticized Merz's silence after the US threats. She said that some of the current European leaders, including the German Chancellor, do not understand how to act in the current international situation.

On March 9, the head of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, called for reforming the institutions of the European Union and its doctrine. According to her, if the EU considers it necessary to have a more realistic and interest-oriented foreign policy, then the bloc should be able to implement it.
