The real name of the street artist, who hides his identity under the pseudonym Banksy, is David Jones. This was reported on March 13 by the Reuters news agency.

The material examined archival photographs, unpublished US police reports and court documents. According to the agency, a handwritten confession was found among the materials, which directly indicates the true name of the author.

Representatives of Pest Control, the company in charge of Banksy's case, declined to comment. Mark Stevens, the artist's lawyer, urged the media not to disclose his client's identity, citing security concerns and the right to privacy. The lawyer stressed that the right to anonymity is fundamental for creative freedom.

"It protects freedom of speech by allowing authors to tell the truth to authorities without fear of retribution, censorship, or harassment, especially when it comes to sensitive issues such as politics, religion, or social justice,— Stevens said.

As part of the investigation, the alleged Banksy's itinerary was restored, including his trip to Ukraine in October 2022. Robert Del Najia from Massive Attack, Bristolian Robin Gunningham and Frenchman Thierry Guetta, known as Mr. Brainwash, are among the main contenders for the role of the artist.

The Daily Telegraph newspaper reported on September 8 last year that Banksy's identity could be revealed due to his graffiti on the courthouse. At the time, it was clarified that in the event of a trial, Banksy would probably have to disclose his first and last name.
