Finns in the survey did not support the deployment of nuclear weapons in the country
Almost half of the Finnish population opposed the idea of deploying nuclear weapons in the country. This was announced on March 11 by the publication Helsingin Sanomat with reference to the Verian company.
"About 31% of Finns support the deployment of nuclear weapons on Finnish territory <...> [1,134 people took part in the survey]. The statistical margin of error of the survey is 2.9 percentage points in both directions," the report says.
The survey revealed a gender gap in the perception of nuclear weapons: men (39%) are more likely than women (17%) to feel safe because of them. Supporters of the Left Alliance have the greatest rejection (81% against).
Among the major parties, opinions are polar: 62% of supporters of the "National Coalition" support the deployment of weapons, while 61% of Social Democrats are against it.
On March 7, Minja Koskela, chairman of the Finnish Left Union Party, noted that the development of a law on the planned lifting of the ban on the transit of nuclear weapons through Finland was being prepared secretly, and the country's parliament was not informed. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov warned on March 5 that Finland, having implemented plans to deploy nuclear weapons on its territory, would pose a threat to Russia, which in turn would be forced to take appropriate measures. This action, he added, would make Helsinki more vulnerable and lead to escalation.
Finnish Defense Minister Antti Hyakkanen, whose words were quoted by Yle TV channel, in turn said that his country was ready for a possible reaction from Russia to changes in legislation on the deployment of nuclear weapons. It was noted that such an intention indicates a desire to maximize the benefits of various nuclear deterrence options provided by NATO membership.
